GoFundMe set up to help pay for shooting victim's funeral

A GoFundMe campaign, set up to help cover the cost of a 24-year-old man who died in this week's shooting in Windsor, has already raised more than half its goal.

The victim, identified as Daniel Squalls in the online campaign, died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds during the incident on Hanna Street East near Parent Avenue, and police are still looking for the suspect, 26-year-old Malique Calloo.

Investigators believe Squalls was targeted.

The campaign describes how Squalls and his girlfriend were raising two young children when he died.

"His death was unexpected and absolutely tragic," wrote Christine McGarrell, who set up the online campaign. "His mother has been very ill for the past few years and is currently recovering from a kidney transplant."

WindsorNewsToday.ca has reached out to McGarrell and the victim's mother for comment.

On Wednesday morning, McGarrell's campaign had raised $6,020 in 19 hours. The set goal was $10,000.

Firefighters found the vehicle used in the shooting on Tuesday morning while responding to a reported vehicle fire. Investigators seized the brown Honda Civic as evidence but haven't found the firearm.

"With that information, Mr Calloo should be considered armed and dangerous," said Staff Sergeant Joe Faddoul. "Anyone who observes Mr Calloo is encouraged to call 911 immediately."

Residents living in the Hanna Street and Parent Avenue area can help by checking their video surveillance footage from around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Those near the vehicle fire on Bloomfield Road at Watkins Street should check in between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The footage could be evidence in the investigation.

On Wednesday, the investigation shifted to an address in the Devonshire Heights neighbourhood in Windsor.  Police warned of a heavy presence in the Kamloops Street and Calderwood Avenue area.
