Virtual Kidney Walk already surpasses local goal

This year's virtual Kidney Walk in Sarnia-Lambton has already surpassed expectations with the amount raised ahead of the actual walk.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada's Kidney Walk is scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Local Chapter Senior Development Manager Elaine Hayter said so far more than 40 participants have signed up for the walk and more are expected to join.

Like last year, the annual walk will be held virtually.

"While we walk different paths, we are united in spirit and joined as one community dedicated to improving the lives of our loved ones [who are] living with kidney disease," said Hayter.

Over $50,000 was collected last year and Hayter said even though the goal has been raised for this year's walk, more donations keep coming in.

"We have raised that goal three times already. Our last goal was $35,000 and as of [Tuesday] we were at over $42,000," said Hayter. "It just keeps climbing and it's not even Sunday! Usually, we get other donations trickling in after Sunday happens. We're really, really pleased so far."

Funds raised through the Kidney Walk will stay within the Sarnia-Lambton community.

"We do commit to research and our research commitment is 50 per cent of our dollars because it's so important to have those research projects happening," said Hayter. "We're so close to London that lots of research is being done directly in London which directly impacts our patients."

Funds raised also support the organization's financial assistance program and peer support program.

Online donations will be collected until the end of December.
