Local Kidney Walk defies pandemic, sets fundraising record

Pandemic or not, this year's Kidney Walk in Sarnia-Lambton raised a record amount for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Local Chapter Executive Director Elaine Hayter said nine teams helped collect over $50,000 and counting.

"Well, it's absolutely a record for us, and we're still getting donations in," she said. "What would we do without the Sarnia-Lambton community? It just steps up once again, and we're not surprised but pleasantly surprised that the numbers are higher than last year."

Hayter said they typically get around 100 to 140 walkers for the event.

"This year, it looks like we've had about 50, but the donations are much higher than any other year, per person."

Hayter said they've had to cancel a few other events earlier in the year, which may have led to more people supporting the 2020 Kidney Walk.

This year's event was held virtually because of COVID-19, as opposed to the regular walk-in Canatara Park.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada said one in 10 Canadians will suffer from kidney disease and it takes an average of seven years for someone to receive a donor.
