Legionnaires name Schoch team captain

The Sarnia Legionnaires have named their captain for the upcoming GOJHL hockey campaign.

Veteran defenceman Ben Schoch will wear the "C" in his fourth full season with the organization.

The 20-year-old 6 foot 7, 240-pound blueliner has nine goals and 54 assists for 63 points in 147 career games.

The Sarnia native played for the Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Midget squad before joining the Legionnaires.

Legionnaires Head Coach Derek Di Muzio said Schoch is the perfect fit to be captain.

"All of the other players look up to him, not only as a leader but because of his stature," said Di Muzio. "He's done all of the right things, he's gotten into great shape over the summer. He'll be a great role model for our team."

It was previously announced that Josh Barraclough, Joey Ferrera, and Jake Vince will be alternate captains.

Di Muzio said all three are deserving of the honour.

"All three of those guys are kind of the engine of our team," said Di Muzio. "They all come with their lunch buckets, they're prepared to work. Their games are very consistent in terms of energy level, and we've rewarded them with a leadership role."

Other players already signed for the year include Carson Peer, Ayden Letang, Reed Stauffer, Brayden Krueger, Jakob Knowles, Nolan DeKoning, Logan Gardner, Ryan Barwitzki, and Cameron Ware.

Sarnia's season gets underway on September 7 when they take on the Buffalo at the Showcase event in Pelham.

They'll battle Caledonia the following day, and host Chatham on September 12 for their home opener.
