Virtual Hike for Hospice sidesteps COVID-19

The annual Hike for Hospice event in Chatham-Kent will be a little different this year due to the COVID-19 situation but organizers plan to march on with a virtual event.

Instead of gathering at Mud Creek Trail on June 14, participants are asked to do an activity of their choice anytime between June 1 and June 14.

“With all of the uncertainty with COVID-19, we are continuing with this event virtually so people still have an opportunity to support compassionate, end-of-life hospice care for families in Chatham-Kent," said Nathan McKinlay, Hike for Hospice co-chair. "Now is the time to come together, while staying apart."

Co-chair Amanda McKinlay said the virtual event also allows participants to run or walk at their leisure at a time that is most convenient.

“The health and safety of our hikers and volunteers is our top priority," she said.

There won't be a registration fee for the virtual event but people are still encouraged to register online.

"We encourage people to still sign up so we know they are participating and so they can set up an online fundraising page,” said McKinlay.

This marks the fourth annual Hike for Hospice event in Chatham-Kent. Over 900 participants took part in last year's fundraiser, which raised $145,000.

Registration for this year's virtual hike can be found here. Residents who want to register or donate can also call 519-354-3113 ext. 2404.
