CK Expo aims to please many, especially Stargate fans

The CK Expo is coming up and fans may have an out of this world experience.

Paul McGillion who played Dr. Carson Beckett in Stargate Atlantis will be a featured guest at the annual convention held in Chatham on April 27.

McGillion -- who grew up in the St. Catharines area -- said the event presents as a great opportunity to visit Southern Ontario and connect with fans.

"Many times when you go to these conventions you see a lot of people that you've seen all over the world," he said. "Especially being on Stargate for so many years -- that has a huge international fan base and when you get a chance to go to these things people are always just so happy to see you and that's always a nice thing."

In 2018, the CK Expo raised about $5,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent. This year, McGillion will help auction off some items using his Scottish accent used to play Dr. Carson Beckett, with a goal of raising $10,000.

"It's [for] a great cause and I know there's a lot of fun things happening at the event too," he said. "You get an opportunity to fly a simulated Star Trek ship... and who doesn't want to do that."

As for what items will be auctioned off, a couple of them will have a special artistic touch.

McGillion and Tony Gray, an artist who has done sketches for Marvel Comics and owns GlassMonkey Studios Inc. in Windsor, will go head to head in a sketch duel competition. Their sketches will be projected for attendees to look at and the sketches will later be sold.

"It's sort of like the AFC instead of the UFC, that artist cage match," said McGillion. "I think I'm going to blow him away. I'm going to go there and sort of freestyle it."

Attendees at the CK Expo may recognize McGillion from a different role as he has been working on several recent projects. Some of which include a mini-series called Unspeakable, a reoccurring role in The Flash, and a couple of Hallmark series including Picture Perfect Mysteries.

CK Expo 2019 will start at 10 a.m. on April 27 and run until 6 p.m. at the John D Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham. The sketch portion of the event between McGillion and Gray is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. Money raised from the event will go towards the local branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
