Police discover 'suspicious man' report was fictional

Chatham-Kent police are reminding parents to talk to their kids about lying to officers -- especially after receiving a fake report about a suspicious man in Chatham.

Police said they received a report Friday morning that two teenage girls had been approached by a man while they were walking on Princess Street near King Street.

After following up on that information over the weekend, which included spending numerous hours canvassing the area and trying to obtain video surveillance of the incident so that officers could identify the man, police later learned that the report was fabricated.

Officers are taking the opportunity to remind the public that giving false statements to police is a crime adding that police resources over the weekend "could've been better utilized if everyone had been honest from the beginning."
