Weather delays repairs to New Scotland Line

The recent wet weather conditions have pushed back the completion date on repairs to the New Scotland Line culvert in Harwich Township.

Work on the New Scotland Line bridge, over the Bates-Bloomfield drain was expected to be complete by the end of November. However, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent issued a statement which said otherwise. Culvert repairs will now start the week of November 26.

New Scotland Line between Kent Bridge Road and Mull Road has been closed since May 5.

"An engineering report was completed and council approved the $422,000 contract to South Shore Contracting of Essex in September," the municipality said in the statement. "The contact was 16 per cent below the engineer’s estimate."

Work that still needs to be done involves the removal of the culvert and the installation of a pre-cast culvert. Once a new culvert is installed, a layer of gravel will be placed on the road as a temporary solution until the spring of 2019. Asphalt will be laid next year, weather permitting.
