Heat Warning In Effect

We're being told to get ready for extreme heat over the next few days.

Heat and humidity will start to build Saturday with temperatures reaching 32 C (90 F) or more Sunday and Monday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gerald Cheng says high humidex values will make it dangerously hot.

"When we look at the humidex it will be in the mid-30s and even higher, so it will be quite uncomfortable for people especially for the vulnerable, the elderly, children, also people with chronic disease," says Cheng. "So just stay hydrated out there, for this weekend, because it is going to get very warm."

Symptoms of heat illness include:

  • dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting
  • headache
  • rapid breathing and heartbeat
  • extreme thirst
  • decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine
If you experience any of these symptoms during a heat event, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.

Cheng also says there'll be no relief from the heat overnight, with lows of 23 C or 24 C (75 F) Saturday and Sunday nights.

A heat warning was issued for Sarnia-Lambton at 3:30pm Friday.

Heat warnings are issued when two or more consecutive days of high temperatures of 31 C or more are forecast, and minimum temperatures at night are 21 C or warmer.

Cheng adds that heat and humidity increase the risk of severe weather.

During heat warnings, Lambton Public Health has Cooling Centres set up across the county.
