Tornado Confirmed Near Lake Erie Wednesday

Environment Canada has confirmed Ontario's first tornado of the season hit Haldimand and Norfolk counties Wednesday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm moved through the towns of Jarvis and Waterford near Lake Erie after 3pm on June 13.

Numerous trees were uprooted or sheared apart, multiple buildings had shingle damage, branches were embedded into the roof of a house, a porch collapsed and several barns were destroyed.

An Environment Canada survey team has concluded the damage was caused by an Enhanced Fujita Scale 2 (EF2) tornado with peak winds near 180 km/h.

There was intermittent damage along a 32 km-long path with a maximum width of 500 m.

Sarnia-Lambton was under a severe thunderstorm watch through the afternoon Wednesday but there were no reports of weather-related damage, and the watch was never elevated to a warning.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gerald Cheng says we've had a really late start to the severe weather season this year.

"We've only just confirmed our first tornado in Ontario in mid-June, usually we'd be able to do that in May," says Cheng. "It is a late start to the season, but with heat and humidity coming with a warmer air mass, there will be a better chance of severe weather."

Temperatures in the low 30 C range and humidex values in the mid-to-high 30 C area are forecast Sunday and Monday.
