SIU Investigating Port Stanley Death

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after the death of a man in Port Stanley.

Elgin OPP, paramedics, and firefighters were called about a 28-year-old man in distress at a home in the beach town around 12:30pm on June 9.

Paramedics performed CPR on the man, reviving him. He was then taken to hospital and placed on life support.

The man died three days later, said the Special Investigation Unit, which was notified about the death last Friday.

Three investigators have been assigned to the case.

Police previously reported being called to a suicide attempt involving a 28-year-old man in the area of West Edith Cavell St. in Port Stanley on the same day and time as this incident. It was one of five separate suicide reports Elgin OPP responded to over a 24 hour period, which prompted them to issue a public reminder of supports available for those in crisis.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
