Trucker Commended After 401 Crash

Provincial police are commending the actions of a trucker who avoided a serious collision on Hwy. 401 in Ingersoll by putting his rig in the ditch.

The OPP say two vehicles spun out in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Culloden Rd. around 6:30am on Tuesday. A tractor trailer driver quickly steered his rig into the ditch to avoid hitting them.

Fortunately, no one was hurt but the transport driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"This tractor trailer driver potentially saved some lives by taking some evasive action and going into the ditch," said OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor in a Periscope video from the scene. "This could have been a very serious collision had this professional driver not taken the action that he did. Kudos to the driver."

The collision slowed the morning commute as the right eastbound lane, west of Culloden Rd., was closed to allow for the removal of the tractor trailer. It was re-opened at 9am.

Police are now reminding motorists to drive according to road and weather conditions.

"When we have inclement weather, such as heavy rain, you have to slow down," said Rektor. "We are expecting this to change into some freezing conditions today as well. This could very well freeze over. Drivers are going to have to make some better and very wise decisions to slow down in inclement weather instead of driving at highway speeds."
