Woman Accused Of Attacking Muslim Unfit For Trial

A woman accused of assaulting a Muslim woman at a Westmount-area grocery store has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial.

The London Free Press reports that during a hearing at the adult therapeutic court on Wednesday, the 38-year-old woman was ordered to appear before the Ontario Review Board within 45 days. The board will monitor her fitness to stand trial.

The woman was charged with one count of assault in relation to the June 20 attack on a Muslim woman at the Superking Supermarket on Wonderland Rd. S.

The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack in which police say she was yelled at, punched and spit on by another woman. The Muslim woman, who was shopping with her 4-month-old son at the time, also had her hijab ripped off and hair pulled.

Police were unable to find a motive for the attack that they described at the time as unprovoked.

The woman's case will not return to court unless she is deemed fit.
