Cowgirls Enjoy Last Day At Calgary Stampede

The Canadian Cowgirls are taking it all in as they wrap up their trip in Calgary.

The Chatham-based group has attracted the eye of many, having won the title of best equestrian entry at the Calgary Stampede parade.

"We are kind of like Canada's jewels," says Terry Jenkins, group captain. "We're getting lots of compliments on our rides and the officials here in Calgary are very impressed with the professionalism of our group."

Jenkins says the group has been performing about two shows a day. However, they have taken some time to relax, do some sight seeing, and enjoy the available food -- like barbecue ribs.

"We are having the time of our lives," she says. "What an opportunity for these young girls. It took me all these years of riding horses ... but here's these young girls at 14-years-old who get to do what it took me 62 years to do. I'm very happy to be a leader of this group, they make me very proud."

Residents in or around the Chatham-Kent area will have a chance to see the cowgirls perform at the beginning of August.

The cowgirls are slated to perform at Bethel Park in West Elgin from 12pm-1pm on August 5; then they're set to perform at the Leamington Sunparlor Rodeo.

"So we go from the biggest rodeo in Alberta to the biggest rodeo in Ontario, so we're very excited about that," she says.

The group will start the four-day journey back home early Monday morning, and should be on home soil by Thursday.
