Spitfires take Russian forward in CHL Import Draft

The Windsor Spitfires continue gearing up for the coming season by taking a player from Russia.

In the CHL Import Draft, held virtually on Wednesday, the Spitfires selected forward Avval Baisov, from the Khanty-Mansiysk Mamonty Yugry.

According to his profile at Elite Prospects, Baisov stands at 6' and weighs 187 pounds, shooting left.

Baisov began playing in 2018 for the Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk Under-16 team in the Russia U-16 league. The following season he added the Under-18 team to his resume, scoring 24 goals for 51 points in the regular season, along with a plus-minus rating of 32.

He played for Team Russia's U-16 team in the 2019-2020 season, playing four games and scoring one assist.

This past season, Baisov divided his time between the Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk Under-17 and Under-18 teams, scoring a total of 17 goals for 33 points. He was then promoted to the Mamonty Yugry, part of Russia's top-tiered junior hockey league, where he scored one goal in 14 games played.

The Spits continue shaping their roster as they prepare to resume play, having had the end of the 2019-2020 campaign and the entire 2020-2021 season cancelled due to COVID-19. In the OHL Entry Draft on June 4, the team chose left winger Ethan Miedema at fourth overall, defenceman Bronson Ride at 20th overall, and left winger Christopher O'Flaherty with the 73rd overall pick.

Windsor opens its season on October 7 at home against the Sarnia Sting.
