Spitfires extinguish Firebirds 7-5

A strong third period pushed the Windsor Spitfires to a 7-5 victory over the Flint Firebirds on Thursday.

The Firebirds kicked off the game with a goal early in the first, but Egor Afanasyev scored for Windsor 10:44 into the first period to tie things up. Flint retook the lead with another goal before the end of the frame, however, the Spitfires responded again with Kyle McDonald and Curtis Douglas scoring back-to-back goals in the first seven minutes of the second.

The Firebirds answered back with another two goals late in the period, but Afanasyev scored his second goal of the night for Windsor with six seconds left in the frame to tie the game once more heading into the third.

Luke Boka and Cole Purboo each scored once in the first three minutes of the final period to give Windsor a 6-4 lead. The Firebirds brought the game within one goal by scoring just after the 12-minute mark, but Tyler Angle added one more goal in the last seconds to cap off the win for Windsor.

Spitfires goalie Xavier Medina made 33 saves out of 38 shots on net.

The Spitfires are in London next on Friday to take on the Knights at 7:30 p.m.
