Jr. hockey wrap-up - December 1, 2018

The LaSalle Vipers and Komoka Kings skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Komoka.

The Vipers have 26 points in the GOJHL Western Conference and are in sixth place. The Kings are in eighth place with 19 points.

Cody Schneider put the Vipers on the board first with the lone goal of the first period, at 13:51. LaSalle doubled their lead to 2-0 at 4:26 with a score from Bradley Vincent, then Komoka cut the lead in half on a power play goal from Joel Mazzilli at 18:56.

The Kings tied the game with 2:29 left in regulation with a goal from Wes Dobbin to force the overtime. Both overtime periods came and went without a goal, and LaSalle outshot Komoka 7-3 in the extra frames.

Will Tragge had 24 saves between the pipes for the Vipers. Nathan Young stopped 33 shots for the Kings.

The Vipers host the conference-leading London Nationals Sunday afternoon. The Kings host those same Nationals next Saturday night.

Kyle Smith had four points in the Mooretown Flags' 9-1 home win over the Wallaceburg Lakers.

The Flags jumped into fourth place in the PJHL Stobbs Division standings with 30 points. The Lakers are now 0-20, with two points and in last place.

Mooretown picked up four goals in the first period alone. They were scored in order by Trevor Bogaert, Smith, Cameron Rannie and Brock Perry. They added three more goals in the first half of the middle frame, off the sticks of Nolan Farr, Cameron Rombouts and Smith's second of the game. The Lakers put up their only goal of the game at 15:21, an unassisted goal by Matt Tourigny.

Brett Farr scored back to back goals for the Flags in the third period.

Jake Wilkins began the game in goal for Mooretown, and backup Bailey Reinders finished it. Together, they combined for 28 saves. For Wallaceburg, Travis Moore was pulled in the second period for Patrick Timpany. They had a total of 50 saves.

The Flags are in Blenheim Sunday night, while the Lakers host Amherstburg Wednesday.

Emmet Pierce had three points in the Strathroy Rockets' 4-3 win over the St. Thomas Stars at West Middlesex Memorial Arena.

The Rockets are in seventh place in the Western Conference leaderboard with 20 points. The Stars are tied for fourth place with the Sarnia Legionnaires with 25.

St. Thomas scored back to back goals in the opening period. Lucas Mastroianni scored the first at 13:18 with Nicolas Grandy doubling the Stars' lead about a minute-and-a-half later.

Starthroy got on the board with Brendan Mairs' goal, scored at 37 seconds left in the second period.

The Stars got a two-goal lead back early in the third period with Jackson Brown's goal, but that lead evaporated as the Rockets scored three unanswered goals. Daniel Aspro scored on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2 at 4:17, Michael Wood tied the game over two minutes later, then Pierce scored the game-winner with 46 seconds left in regulation.

Vince Michelizzi took the win for Strathroy, stopping 23 shots. Jesse Hodgson had 36 saves for St. Thomas.

The Rockets head to Sarnia on Thursday night, while St. Thomas is off until they host St. Marys on Sunday, December 9.
