Spitfires Break Spirit 5-1

Lucas Patton picked up his first OHL win as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Saginaw Spirit 5-1 Saturday night at the Dow Event Center.

Patton stopped all but one of Saginaw's 28 shots in his second straight game with the Spitfires since being called up earlier this week from the Chatham Maroons.

Windsor is in sole possession of third place in the OHL West Division with 39 points.

The Spitfires wasted little time scoring in the first period, putting up three. Jake Smith started things off with his seventh goal of the season at 4:15. Cole Purboo doubled the Windsor lead less than four minutes later, then Curtis Douglas scored his second goal in his many games in a Spitfires uniform. That was enough to chase Saginaw goalie Evan Cormier out of the game and replace him with Cameron Lamour.

Damien Giroux's 13th goal of the year put the Spirit on the board at 8:40 of the middle stanza. Purboo's second goal of the game gave the Spits a three-goal lead once again, 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Austin McEneny added to Windsor's lead with the lone goal in the third period.

Cormier and Lamour combined for 21 saves in net for the Spirit.

The Spitfires are now off on Christmas break. Their next contest is Thursday, December 28 when they visit the Sarnia Sting.
