Flint Grounds Spits 4-3 in Overtime

The Windsor Spitfires were unable to close the deal Sunday afternoon.

The Spits tied the game with 46 seconds left in regulation, but the Flint Firebirds scored 28 seconds into overtime to beat Windsor 4-3 at the WFCU Centre.

Windsor does get a point out of the game. They now have 32 points and are in third place in the OHL West Division standings.

It didn't take long before the Spitfires got on the board first. William Sirman scored his third goal of the year at 1:17 into the opening period. The Firebirds tied it up before the first intermission when Connor Roberts scored unassisted.

Maurizio Colella gave Flint the lead at 9:19 in the middle frame, but Aaron Luchuk tied the game again before the end of the period with his 23rd goal of the season.

Both teams exchanged a goal in the third period. The Firebirds went out in front again with Jake Durham's goal at 4:46. Windsor's Jake Smith knotted the game again on a power play score to force the overtime period. This goal was reviewed because it appeared the goal came off its supports, but the score was confirmed.

Jalen Smereck's first goal of the season was a big one for himself and Flint. It came as the overtime winner.

Brock Baier had 21 saves in goal for the Spitfires in the losing effort. Luke Cavallin won in goal for Flint, with 30 saves out of 33 attempts.

The Spitfires next travel to Kitchener, in a rare Tuesday night game against the Rangers.
