Essex 73’s Lose Schmalz Cup FinalApril 27, 2014 7:53pm
The Lakefield Chiefs are Schmalz Cup champions after a four game series sweep against the Essex 73’s.
During Sunday’s game, the 73’s drew first blood with a goal in the first period, but couldn’t climb back after the Chiefs scored four in a row before the end of the second. The Chiefs added two more in the third period to ensure their 6-2 win.
73’s Head Coach Gil Langlois says he’s proud of every one of his players, but says the team had reoccurring issues with penalties and discipline.
“I don’t think there’s any big secret there that we needed to do a better job of keeping our emotions in check,” says Langlois. “Nobody want’s to go out in four straight (games). It puts a damper on an otherwise good year.”
Philip Janikowski and Aaron Thibert scored both goals for Essex. Lakefield out shot Essex 40-35.
