Electric vehicles to get a bigger stage at Detroit Auto Show

North America's most prestigious auto show plans to embrace electric-vehicle technology in September.

The Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) laid out the plans Wednesday for the 2023 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), to be held at Detroit's Huntington Place and in the surrounding area. The event will feature again an indoor-outdoor experience for auto buffs.

The DADA said the exposition will remain true to its mission of bringing cutting-edge auto technology to the Motor City.

"Automotive technology is changing so rapidly, how do we make people comfortable with it?" said Auto Show Chairman Thad Szott "We’re planning for a show that not only embraces and educates about this new technology but offers an immersion into it. And with twice the number of brands participating, there’ll be no shortage of engaging with it."

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the show will keep its place as one of the world's most elite automotive expositions.

"The very nature of how people get from Point A to Point B is changing in ways more profound than at any time since the dawn of the auto industry," said Duggan. "This year’s Auto Show will reflect this shift and make it clear to the world Detroit continues to be at the forefront of mobility innovation."

The auto show is providing a lot of space for electric vehicles. For the first time, it will feature a new EV Experience indoor track, which will include an acceleration lane stretching 300 feet, or 91.4 metres. Also new to the show are added street course ride-and-drives, and an inaugural, content-rich Mobility Global Forum.

Detroit's so-called Big Three automakers, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, have already agreed to bring their entire brand portfolios, with organizers confirming numerous vehicle reveals and the number of participating brands doubling from the 2022 show.

The Mobility Global Forum, on September 13 and 14, will be a symposium that will address the changing world of mobility and transportation and the trends and issues facing the ever-evolving automotive industry. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer will give the keynote speech.

The NAIAS will open on September 13 with media day. In addition to the Mobility Global Forum, the Technology Days and AutoMobili-D will be held on September 13 and 14. The Charity Preview is on September 15, and the public days are September 16 to 24.

Complete information about the NAIAS can be found on its official website.
