Boat rides to Peche Island return (Video)

Now that the warm weather is here, residents can take a boat ride to Peche Island.

Those are offered every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday until early October. The first tour is on Saturday.

Tours begin each day at 10 a.m. at Lakeview Park Marina, with the last ride leaving at 1 p.m.

Guests should pre-register since the boat only seats six people and leaves twice an hour. Pets and larger personal items like bikes are not allowed on the vessel.

Peche Island is a popular spot with local history buffs.

Hiram Walker bought the 86-acre island in 1883 and used it as a summer home. It's home to the ruins of Walker's house, greenhouse, icehouse, and stable.

The City of Windsor acquired it from the Province of Ontario in 1999. It now boasts docking facilities, walking trails, picnic tables and washrooms.

Those interested in booking a tour can call 519-255-1161.

The cost of a round trip on the boat is $7.75, although children under 3 can ride for free.
