Labour council shows support to PSAC

Members of the Windsor District Labour Council rallied with striking members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada in front of Windsor City Hall Tuesday.

"To let them know that their community is behind them because sometimes people question 'Are we doing the right thing?' And I think as workers, it's incumbent upon us as a labour council to say you are doing the right thing and you're not fighting just for yourself, you're fighting for people around you," said Mario Spagnuolo, interim president of the Windsor District Labour Council.

Over 300 PSAC members in Windsor have been on strike for a week. The federal employees have been working without a contract for over two years.

Compensation and work conditions are said to be at the centre of the dispute.

Spagnuolo said all workers need to support the people on strike because the settlement will have a trickle-down effect on other work places.

"Workers are not being compensated fairly, inflation is through the roof and yet wages are not keeping up. So every day that goes by workers are falling further and further behind yet the very 1 per cent at the top seem to be doing very well," said Spagnuolo

Both sides remain at the bargaining table, but few details have been released about negotiations.

PSAC members will be rallying at various points throughout the city this week. A full schedule has not been released.
