New accessible playground coming to Willistead Park

The City of Windsor has started making upgrades to one of its most historic public spaces.

A series of improvements is underway for Willistead Park in Olde Walkerville. The focal point will be a new accessible playground.

"The new playground will be custom designed and themed with elements inspired by Willistead Manor’s architecture," read a release from the City. "The structure will be accessible and feature a ramped gazebo, play panels, and rubber surface. A large tube slide, swings, and climber are also being included. The new playground will be located in the same location as the existing one."

The current playground will be closed completely while construction is going on, though the rest of the park's pathways and open spaces will be available as usual. People can use the accessible playground at Lanspeary Park in the meantime.

Willistead Park surrounds historic Willistead Manor, the former estate of Hiram Walker. It includes a series of pathways with interconnecting loops, and over 300 trees.

Construction on the new playground is expected to be completed in May.
