Immunization suspensions reduced by half in Windsor-Essex

Over half of the elementary school students suspended in Windsor-Essex this week for incomplete immunizations have returned to class.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit provided an update Wednesday morning on the number of Kindergarten through Grade 8 students still suspended. The health unit reported 892 students affected.

The health unit will continue to offer daily immunization clinics to those missing the required shots.

"Please note that if your child is ill, they will not be immunized," read a release from the health unit Wednesday. "Please wait to bring your child to be immunized when they are well."

Parents can have their child removed from the suspension list by obtaining missing shots or a valid exemption from a health care provider and having it faxed to the health unit, hand-delivering records to the health unit's Windsor or Leamington office, updating the record online with proof, or attending a walk-in clinic operated by the health unit. Once any of those requirements are met, the student may return to school.

A total of 1,908 K-8 students were suspended Monday, according to Ontario law, for having missing vaccines, incomplete immunization records, or a lack of a valid exemption.
