Free baseball clinic for kids in the west-end

Brian Masse and members of the Windsor-West community are hosting an event this month to encourage more participation in little league.

On March 25, youth aged 4 to 17 are invited to a free baseball clinic at the Toldo Lancer Centre to experience what the sport is all about.

The goal of the clinic is to attract more kids to the Windsor West Little League.

"Some new families to this sport, you can feel intimidated. We forget that even as adults it's not easy to grab your kids together and go to an organization or place that you've never been before and turn over your kids to a new experience," said Masse.

Each year, the volunteer organization offers youth baseball for ages 4 to 17 as well as girls' softball/fastball teams. At one time, the organization had around 600 kids registered, last year there were around 140 kids signed up.

"It's hard for a parent to commit, especially if there is a cost if they don't know if their kid is going to like it. So we're trying to give them a little bit of what it is to play baseball," said Yvette Temple, president of the Windsor West Little League. "They're going to be able to go out there, they're going to hit, they're going to throw, they're going to catch, give them a little experience before their parents have to commit them to a sport."

The clinic is being offered to 75 kids. To register for the free event contact Masse's office at 519-255-1631.

In addition, the baseball league has partnered with Nantais Athletic Inc on the west end to collect donations of gently used youth baseball equipment. The equipment can be dropped off at Nantais Sports Shop's new location at 1485 Tecumseh Road West.
