Prescribed burns planned this month in Ojibway Prairie Complex

If you live in West Windsor, you might associate it with the arrival of spring, prescribed burns in the Ojibway Prairie Complex.

The City of Windsor is warning residents and drivers in that part of the city they might see or smell smoke from time to time while they conduct the burns around Ojibway Park, Black Oak Heritage Park, Spring Garden Natural Area, Chappus Street, and Howard Avenue South near Highway 3.

The city has used prescribed burns to manage Windsor's prairie and savannah ecosystems for 40 years. Naturalist and Outreach Coordinator Karen Alexander said it is necessary to maintain a healthy and diverse environment.

During the burns, parks in the area may close temporarily. Signs will be posted to notify the public.

Nearby neighbours might also want to keep their windows closed when the smoke is in the air.
