Police patrolling with social workers to address aggressive panhandling

The Windsor Police Service is launching a new initiative to address aggressive panhandling in the city.

Officers will be patrolling high-volume panhandling areas with social workers from Family Services Windsor-Essex.

"There's numerous charges that can be laid under the Safe Streets Act but charges aren't the only goal, if we can get them help and services I believe that would be our priority," said Constable Adam Young.

The extra patrols will focus on Ouellette Avenue, Univeristy Avenue and McDougall Avenue. The teams will be deployed seven days a week.

"We want to reassure the community that we're not specifically targeting members of our homeless population rather we are focusing on individuals who violate the Safe Streets Act or create a situation that puts themselves or others in danger," said Young.

Young indicated Windsor Police Services will be checking in with residents and businesses to ensure the issues are being addressed.
