No charges after SIU investigation

The provincial police watchdog has decided to not lay criminal charges after a man was hurt while being transferred to the Southwest Detention Centre last year.

An investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was launched on October 31 after a 57-year-old man, who was arrested for causing damage to a vehicle, was injured after refusing to leave his cell.

The man was being lodged in cells at Windsor Police Headquarters while awaiting transfer to the correctional facility.

The complainant refused to leave his cell so officers with shields entered the cell and pushed him against the wall where he was eventually handcuffed.

Officers then took the man to the hospital where he was diagnosed with two right lateral rib fractures.

SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence. The SIU closed the file.
