Day five and no end in sight to strike at Highbury Canco

Almost a week after they hit the picket lines, striking workers at Highbury Canco are as resolute as ever.

About 400 United Food and Commercial Workers members walked off the job on Monday after rejecting the company's final offer last Saturday.

Director of Region Six Sam Caetano has no idea when the two sides will return to bargaining.

"We reached out to the employer on Monday and had a conservation with them about what caused the strike, but there was no discussion about getting back to the table," he said.

He couldn't say how long the strike might last.

"It could last a month. It could last a week. It could last a year. We don't know," said Caetano.

The dispute is about pay.

"None of us wants a strike or a labour dispute," said Caetano. "However, the members had voted down the final offer stating that there wasn't a large enough increase in the first year."

He told WindsorNewsToday.ca, like everyone else, the workers at the Leamington plant suffer financial strain.

"The price of gas, the price of food, the Bank of Canada increasing the interest rates so often in a ten-month period, employees, or members, are seeking an increase to maintain their standard of life," he explained.

Last November, the workers voted almost unanimously in favour of strike action to back their demands.
