Capitol Theatre centennial celebration coming up

Two years after its actual 100th anniversary, the City of Windsor will finally celebrate the Capitol Theatre's centennial next weekend.

The Windsor Capitol Theatre officially opened on December 30, 1920.

Unfortunately, celebrating the milestone the day it turned 100 would have been impossible because of public health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To make up for it, the City of Windsor is hosting the Capitol Legacy Celebration on Saturday, February 18, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event kicks off with a family concert by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are $5 per person.

From 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m., the public can participate in a Downtown Windsor Heritage Walking Tour.

At 1 p.m., officials will give an update on renovations at the Capitol Theatre.

Tours of the Capitol Theatre are planned from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a WIFF screening of Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Chimczuk Museum will host a Windsor Symphony Orchestra pop-up exhibit.

"Reflecting on its 100-year history, the Capitol Theatre was a place where many residents saw great films and made amazing memories. Since its reinvention in the 1990s -- the Capitol Theatre has been an incubator and a venue for performing arts in our region," said Executive Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra Sheila Wisdom. "The WSO is proud to manage this vital community asset on the part of the City of Windsor."

The theatre has been undergoing renovations over the past few years thanks to a $500,000 grant from the federal government and $1.8-million from the city.

Work is underway to upgrade ten 25-year-old HVAC units, add 2,000 sq. ft. of useable space, replace the carpet throughout the theatre, improve the stage, and enhance video and lighting equipment.

"Windsor is growing, creatively, and we understand the economic and quality-of-life impacts that are possible through these significant investments in arts, culture, and heritage," said Commissioner of Community Services with the City of Windsor Ray Mensour.
