Health unit approves compromise for future of SafePoint

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit will move forward with operating the SafePoint safe consumption and treatment site at 101 Wyandotte while looking for a new location.

The compromise developed by Windsor City Council at Monday night's meeting was approved by the board at a Special Meeting Friday morning.

The board also appointed Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Augostino as the chair of a new site selection committee. This committee has been tasked with finding a new location for a safe consumption site.

"I'm so happy that we were able to come to this compromise and I look forward to the future of trying to help people over the next four years as best as we can," said Agostino.

The current location will continue to operate until a new location is selected and is ready to open. It is not the intention to operate two sites in Windsor.

The site at the current location will open once it received approval from the federal government. The health unit is hopeful the doors will open in late March.
