UWindsor raises flag for Black History Month for first time

For the first time in the University of Windsor's history, the Pan-African flag was raised on campus in honour of Black History Month.

Clinton Beckford, Vice-President, of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion said the ceremony shows the progress the university has made.

"Some days, we're not quite sure if we're making a difference or making progress but I think I am really proud today to see the gathering and the support but also to see us raising this flag for the very first time," said Beckford.

Beckford applauded current university leadership, the anti-Black racism task force and the Black History Black Futures Working Group for taking steps to improve life on campus.

He indicated the task force came up with 41 recommendations last year and an action plan to implement those recommendations is well underway.

"I think that's one of the ways in which we've changed significantly is that we are committed to going beyond words and taking action that is going to make a difference in people's lives," said Beckford.

The University of Windsor and the Black History Black Futures Working Group have events throughout the month to recognize, honour, and celebrate the significant contributions of people of the African Diaspora in Canada.
