Bridge project invests another $2.3M in community benefits

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is investing another $2.3 million into the community through its community benefit program.

The funding will go toward 11 new projects and six existing initiatives that focus on community partnerships, economic benefits, community safety, and neighbourhood aesthetics.

"The community benefits plan is one of the ways that we're able to directly benefit the communities immediately adjacent to the project and seeing the initiatives that have already been delivered have that positive impact is exactly what we wanted to achieve," said Heather Grondin, vice-president of corporate affairs and external relations with the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority.

In total, $20 million has been dedicated to the neighbourhood infrastructure strategy. The plan was launched in 2019 and will continue to fund initiatives until 2025.

To date, 40 initiatives have been supported. They include community tree planting, public art installations, and support for local businesses and community programming.

This round of funding will go to Indigenous youth programming and events through Turtle Island- Aboriginal Education Centre, youth mental health services, Sandwich BIA programming, the relocation of the tri-centenary canoe monument, and girls' group programming at the Sandwich Teen Action Group.
