Wind conditions could cause flooding

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a shoreline conditions statement for the Lake Erie shoreline because of forecasted wind conditions.

The forecasts predicts wind speeds will shift to out of the south-southwest Friday afternoon and could reach sustained speeds of up to 55 kilometres per hour.

These winds are forecasted to last overnight Friday, shift to out of the west-southwest early morning and dissipate by Saturday morning.

Elevated lake levels and wind conditions pose some risk of flooding however the criteria to issue a flood watch has not been reached.

"There remains some risk of flooding and accelerated near shore erosion along the Lake Erie shoreline including south Pelee Island as a result of increased wave activity," the ERCA statement said.

People are encouraged to take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events. The combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping shoreline structures, and fast-moving water can be dangerous.
