Windsor councillor to request change in CTS location

A Windsor city councillor plans to introduce a motion urging his colleagues to reconsider the location of a planned safe-consumption site.

Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino will introduce his motion at Monday's City Council meeting. According to the motion, seen on the City's official website, Agostino will request a rethink of the location for the Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) site, which is set to go in at 101 Wyandotte Street East.

"Whereas a previous City Council approved a location for a safe injection site at 101 Wyandotte Street East," read the motion. "Whereas the approved site was put forward quickly after the Windsor Essex County Health Unit failed to secure a lease at another location, 628 Goyeau Street; and Whereas consultation for the Wyandotte Street location was considered problematic by many affected residents and businesses in the surrounding area."

The motion requests that City Council rescind its approval of the 101 Wyandotte East location, and work with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit on "short-term and long-term options", such as inclusion in the current Homelessness and Housing Help Hub (H-4), and mobile CTS delivery.

The health unit, which is overseeing the application for the CTS, completed three days of virtual public townhalls Thursday. During the sessions, health unit representatives and stakeholders provided updates on the progress at the Wyandotte East location. The application is pending with Health Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health, with the health unit hopeful the CTS will open by the end of March.
