Students raise over $20,000 to help build homes in Serbia

The student group at the University of Windsor will be able to help more families in need than expected after a successful fundraising campaign to help Serbian families realize their dream of homeownership.

The Association of Serbian Student Philanthropists kicked off their campaign last August with a club-like event called Zurka iz Bloka. Proceeds went to Serbs for Serbs Canada, which helps the poorest Serbian families with basic necessities.

The fundraiser aided the Babic family in the village of Sekular. Their home is complete, and the furniture has arrived.

Donations continued to come in after the event, and eventually, it raised $20,000. However, Serbs for Serbs Canada has a policy that no more than $10,000 can go to each family. The rest of the fund will help more families, including the Vujacic family of Budva, the Matovic family living in Velimlje, and the Slavujevic family from Jarebica.

"We are overwhelmed and incredibly thankful to our Serbian community and Windsor community friends for coming together to support this charitable event," said Petar Bratic of the association. "It is a true testament to how our community can come together to make a big impact."
