New CCH opens in Windsor (VIDEO)

Windsor's newest high school opens today, but only for the staff.

Monday is a P.A. Day for students at the new Catholic Central High School on McDougall Avenue.

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board scheduled the P.A. Day in February but switched it for students at Catholic Central, so the teachers had time to move into their new classrooms.

About 900 students arrive on Tuesday. Grade 9s and 10s will get their first look inside the new building in the morning, and Grade 11s and 12s in the afternoon.

The school board tendered the project just a year ago when the Ministry of Education signed off on the designs. Previously, the Ministry approved $26.7-million for construction.

Oscar Construction Company Limited built the school. The contractor built several other schools for the Catholic school board, including St. Joseph's Catholic High School in east Windsor, St. Anne's Catholic High School in Lakeshore, Holy Name Catholic Elementary School in Essex, and St. Christopher Catholic Elementary School near the E.C. Row Expressway.

The new high school was originally going to go up in downtown Windsor, on the site of the former Windsor Arena, but the board ultimately decided it would be too costly and take too long.
