Caesars Windsor to officially open Sportsbook

After a decade-long battle, Caesars Windsor will open its new state-of-the-art Caesars Sportsbook for gamblers who want to bet on single games and other sports events.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Wednesday with Grant Fuhr, a former Edmonton Oiler and Hockey Hall of Famer, in front of Legends Sports Bar inside the casino.

Other dignitaries expected at the event include Windsor West MP Brian Masse, who led the fight to legalize single-event sports betting after former Windsor-Tecumseh MP Joe Comartin retired. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and the President of Caesars Windsor, Kevin Laforet, will also attend.

Seven self-service betting kiosks will open, featuring 22 large-screen HD LED TVs, providing bettors with what the casino calls "unparalleled views and fan-favourite menu items from Legends."

"The elevated, modern design offers an inviting, lounge-like space to enjoy sports events in a luxurious environment worthy of a Caesars," read a release from the casino.

Canada legalized single-event sports betting in August 2021 with the passing of Bill C-218. The bill was presented by Conservative MP Kevin Waugh and supported by Masse. Previously, MPs in the House of Commons voted on the issue three times, only to have the bill die in the Senate or when the House broke for an election.

Regulation of it was left up to the provinces.

The Canadian Gambling Association estimated Canadians spent $10-billion a year on single-event sports betting operated illegally by organized crime. It said another $4-billion went to offshore internet sites.
