Spitfires pick up two players, trade 11 draft picks

It was a busy Tuesday at the offices of the Windsor Spitfires as they acquired two new players.

Early in the afternoon, the OHL club announced it had picked up defenceman Jacob Holmes from the Sudbury Wolves in exchange for five draft picks.

The Wolves will get the Spits' fourth-round 2023 pick from Oshawa, their second-round 2024 pick via Kitchener, their second-round 2025 pick from Kingston, their sixth-round pick in 2026, and their third-round pick in 2026 from Niagara.

Holmes said he's happy to be on board with the defending OHL Western Conference champions.

"It’s something that I am very excited for, Windsor is a great organization," Holmes said in a media release. "They have a great team this year, and I am looking forward to making a deep playoff run with the squad they have."

Holmes is from Alliston, Ontario, and was the first-round pick in 2019 for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL Priority Selection. He was drafted by the NHL's Dallas Stars in the fifth round of the 2021 Entry Draft. So far season, Holmes has three goals for 18 points with Sudbury.

The Spitfires weren't done yet, though. Later in the afternoon, they announced the pickup of forward Brett Harrison from the Oshawa Generals in exchange for six more Windsor draft picks.

Spitfires General Manager Bill Bowler explained why they went after Harrison.

"Brett is an elite veteran player," said Bowler. "Brett is a prolific scorer that will help our team on both sides of the puck."

Oshawa will get in return its second-round pick for 2023, a second and third-round pick in 2024' with the latter being via Barrie; the Spits' third-round pick in 2025 from Sudbury, and Windsor's third and fifth-round picks in 2026.

Harrison comes from Dorchester, Ontario, and was drafted by Oshawa in the first round of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. He is a draftee of the NHL's Boston Bruins. This season with the Generals, Harrison scored 21 goals for 37 points.

The Spitfires are back in action Wednesday night when they host the Saginaw Spirit.
