OPP urges care on roads in winter weather

With a major winter storm bearing down on Ontario, provincial police have passed along tips on how to drive safely if you must go out.

Environment Canada has called for rain on Friday, with falling temperatures raising the likelihood of flash-freezing, in which road surfaces may get slippery with little or no notice. The snowfall in Friday's forecast will cover roads and make travel slow and slippery.

"Be prepared for the unexpected. Give yourself some extra time if possible, and remember, road safety is everyone's responsibility. We want everyone to get to their destination safely this holiday season," said OPP Essex County Detachment Commander Inspector Angela Ferguson.

The OPP say your best protection in winter weather is not to travel unless you have to. If you must travel, plan ahead and drive according to the conditions.

Take a few extra minutes before leaving to clean the snow and ice off your vehicle's windshield, windows, and roof. The OPP say any debris flying off your vehicle may create trouble for another driver, and if you can't see where you're going, your collision risk is higher.

Police also suggest steering gently on wet or slick roads and turning off the cruise control.

The OPP also suggest having an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stranded with extra warm clothing, high-energy snacks, a flashlight, a cell phone charger, matches, candles, and other items. A fully-charged cell phone is also a good idea.

If you aren't sure about the road conditions where you're going, call 511 or visit Ontario 511 on social media. The OPP has asked drivers not to call 911 to inquire about road conditions as it will tie up the lines for those having life-or-death emergencies.
