Over 500 families receive holiday food hamper

The UHC Hub of Opportunities is handing out over 500 holiday food hampers this week with the help of donors and volunteers.

The hampers include a turkey or chicken, potatoes, carrots, onions, salad, stuffing, and more to ensure everyone will have a meal this season.

"It's a great feeling to know that we're able to do this today and a lot of families are going to enjoy a Christmas dinner because of the generosity of so many people," said June Muir, executive director of the UHC Hub of Opportunities.

Donations came from Plains Midstream Canada, Spectra Financial, and members of the community.

"Being in financial services, I see people who are struggling every single day. Whether a person is making 40k a year or 200k a year, the debts racked up over COVID, people are not in a good position financially," said Sean Penhale with Spectra Financial. "To be able to come out here and help and support the community, it's great."

The holidays meals were given out to foodbank clients who preregistered.

"People have called in, they've gotten their ticket and if we couldn't assist them we sent them to another organization that is giving out turkeys so hopefully no one goes without this Christmas season," said Muir.
