ENWIN launches Green Button

Enwin Utilities customers can now access their usage data digitally to help them save on their energy bills.

The utility has launched the Green Button platform, a standardized form being used throughout Ontario.

"Green Button offers customers the ability to download their consumption count information and billing information in a standardized format and offers the options to connect their data to third-party applications," said Robert Spagnuolo, director of customer care and billing with ENWIN utilities.

Studies have found that access to energy data, which Green Button along with smart home devices enables, can help consumers achieve energy savings of up to 18 per cent.

These third-party applications can be developed by any individual or business but must be verified by ENWIN in order to protect private data.

"By opening this up to third-party apps it really gives customers greater choice, and the ability to use apps that are more attuned to what they need," said Spagnuolo.

The Green Button standard was launched by the provincial government in November 2021.

"Families and businesses want to be in the driver's seat when it comes to their energy bills. Green Button is part of our commitment to give consumers more choice when it comes to their energy use and will enable easy, quick, and secure access to their consumption data through smartphone or computer apps so they can find customized tips to reduce energy use or switch electricity price plans to save money," said Energy Minister Todd Smith.

All Ontario electricity and natural gas utilities are required to adopt the format by November 1, 2023.
