UPDATE: Winds cancel Pelee Island Ferry through Thursday morning

A strong cold front has brought strong winds to Windsor-Essex with gusts along Lake Erie of over 80 km/h.

It was so windy the Pelee Island Ferry cancelled its sailing Wednesday from 10 a.m. forward.

The ferry put out an update Wednesday afternoon, which at first stated that the service will not start again until Thursday evening. It later tweeted out that service will resume Thursday with the Pelee Islander 2 leaving Kingsville at 6:30 a.m., 10 a.m., and 6 p.m. It will leave the island Thursday from 8 a.m., 4 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

Environment Canada's special weather statement said strong winds would continue into Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the Essex Region Conservation Authority issued a shoreline condition statement on Wednesday morning warning of damage to shoreline structures and accelerated erosion.

"West winds of this magnitude are expected to temporarily lower water levels in the western basin of Lake Erie. However, in areas where there is deeper water, strong wave activity is expected to cause some splashing and spray, and may also cause damage to shoreline structures," read its statement, singling out the western shore of Pelee Island.

It urged residents to be cautious around waterways.

"The combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping shoreline structures, and fast-moving water can be dangerous," it said.

The shoreline condition statement is in effect until 1 p.m. on Thursday.
