Rainy weather prompts ERCA to issue watershed statement

With heavy rain in the forecast, the Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a watershed condition statement.

"There is a concern for the accumulation of standing water in low lying areas throughout the Essex Region, especially adjacent to and within floodplain areas of all major waterways and shoreline areas," said Water Resources Engineer Tian Martin.

Forecasts are predicting another significant rainfall Sunday afternoon with about 10 to 25 mm expected by the evening.

"Highs of 40 mm are expected," said Martin.

A watershed condition statement falls below the flood watch threshold but because of the high lake levels and forecasted rainfall, it will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Monday morning.

Residents are encouraged to take caution and avoid areas where flooding is or can occur, as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas.

"The combination of slippery banks and fast moving water can be dangerous," said Martin. "Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from flowing or standing water."
