New employment support centre opens for laid-off auto workers

The provincial government is providing funding to help laid-off auto workers find new employment.

A new employment action centre will open at UNIFOR 195 to serve 289 Syncreon workers who were recently laid off.

The funding will also allow the action centre at UNIFOR Local 444 to continue to operate; that centre is supporting Stellantis employees laid off from the third shift.

The provincial government is providing $550,000 to operate both centres until the end of 2023.

"There's still a need for it, it's really a good evil, and I say that because we really don't want an adjustment centre, we want people working," said UNIFOR Local 444 President David Cassidy.

The action centre established in late 2020 to help employees laid off from Stellantis has already helped around 600 people update their resumes, find new full-time work or go back to school to start second careers.

The centres also offer peer-to-peer counselling and other mental health supports for the members.
