Windsor put on A-list for climate action

The City of Windsor has been placed on a list of communities that have gone the extra kilometre in fighting climate change.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has placed Windsor among its 123 worldwide communities on its A-List for taking bold steps in addressing environmental action despite the uncertainty of the worldwide economic situation.

"The City of Windsor is thrilled to accept this designation for our early leadership on environmental stewardship while we recognize the need to continue to improve our systems and approach," said Mayor Drew Dilkens in a media release. "There is no doubt that all governments need to make climate change risk a focus of decision-making going forward. As Mayor, I’m confident that our City Council and administration, working together, will rise to this challenge."

Windsor is one of 49 cities or counties across North America to make the 2022 A-list.

To be considered for placement on the CDP's A-list, a city or county must demonstrate a proactive approach to protecting the environment and implementing climate change initiatives. Windsor has been recognized for its park maintenance, its Sewer and Coastal Flood Management Plan, and its plan to reduce emissions through active transportation and home energy retrofitting. The City has also been recognized for the upcoming battery plant project and the retooling of the Windsor Assembly Plant to allow for the production of electric vehicles.

"From mitigating carbon emissions in line with science to building resilience against floods, drought and other climate hazards, to centring marginalized and vulnerable communities in their response, A-List local governments are demonstrating best-practice environmental action," CDP Head of Cities, States, Regions and Public Authorities Katie Walsh. "Windsor is in the vanguard of cities and counties leading the way toward a climate-safe future."
