Windsor opens temporary shelter for apartment residents

Residents temporarily displaced from a Windsor apartment building will have a place to stay.

The City of Windsor has offered the Constable John Atkinson Memorial Community Centre as a temporary shelter for residents of 1616 Ouellette Avenue.

The apartment building's boiler has failed, resulting in no centralized heat. City building officials had ordered the complex evacuated until crews restore heat and electricity and place safety measures into effect.

The Atkinson Centre is offered for residents of the building unable to find accommodations.

"1616 Ouellette Avenue is a privately owned building with 120 residential rental units," read a statement from the City. "The building’s owners have been notified of the orders and say they are committed to having the issues fixed as quickly as possible."

How long the Ouellette Avenue building will be without heat is not known but the City said electricians and HVAC contractors are on the scene to determine how best to proceed.

City of Windsor staff and volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross will operate the temporary shelter. Recreational programming at the Atkinson Centre has been suspended, with program users being notified.
