Windsor Police will use a one-time grant from the Ontario government to enhance the technology that helps identify stolen vehicles.
Police cruisers are equipped with automated license plate recognition technology. Cameras attached to the cruiser scan the license plates of other vehicles. Computer software then identifies if the plate belongs to a stolen vehicle, whether it is expired or registered to suspended drivers. It can also identify vehicles flagged in Amber Alerts.
Windsor Police received $1,492,628 to enhance the technology.
Police services across Ontario received funding.
"This kind of smart policing project helps the Windsor Police detect and thwart auto thefts in our city," said Mayor Drew Dilkens.
The technology does not detect moving violations like speeding, distracted driving, or vehicles going through red lights.
