Windsor-Essex hits sad COVID-19 milestone

A grim statistic has been reached in Windsor-Essex when it comes to COVID-19.

In its weekly COVID-19 case report issued Thursday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported that the total number of COVID-19-related deaths in the region has reached 700 people, since the pandemic was first declared in March 2020.

The health unit reported two deaths this week.

There were also 150 new cases of COVID-19 reported by the health unit during the period between November 9 and November 16.

Twelve total COVID-19 outbreaks are being monitored by the health unit. Five of them are in long-term care or retirement facilities, four are in the community, and three are in hospitals. The health unit updates outbreak data daily.

As of Friday afternoon, Windsor Regional Hospital reported a total of 28 patients admitted with COVID-19, with half of them, 14, treated primarily for the illness. Of the 28 patients, 23 of them have been fully vaccinated.

The hospital also reported one patient in intensive care being treated for COVID-19.
